When developing a product or machine, there are often many considerations regarding materials, design, etc. Our experience with both product development and production equipment makes us adept at adapting the product for production, and vice versa. There can be a big difference between making one part and making ten thousand parts. An unfavorable design can make the product too expensive and difficult to produce, but small changes can sometimes dramatically reduce the cost. This can be the difference between success and failure.

Cody is developing a custom-built, automated manufacturing unit that handles ultra-thin foil to produce insulating glass that is lighter and more energy-efficient – ​​and which will enable Hybridized to produce its insulating glass on a larger scale.

In a recent case, we developed a machine to automate what was a difficult and demanding manual process. During the project, it became clear that the technical challenges were significant. Together with the customer, we began to examine the product and why it was designed the way it was. In short, the product was optimized for this manual process. We changed components in the product and combined materials in new ways. As a result, we were able to create a machine that assembled the product. The outcome for the customer was that they now own the patent for this automated process and have established a collaboration with one of the world's largest manufacturers of similar machines.

In the Learo project, Cody stepped in early to transform an idea into a scalable, market-ready product. By collaborating from the prototype stage, we ensured the customizable door handle was designed for efficient production and future growth.

Risk and Financial Instruments

We find that those who dare to pursue their ideas find great joy in working on what they are passionate about. However, the entrepreneurial life is not just about product development and marketing plans. It is also about managing technical and financial risks throughout the startup process. Technical risk, or "Will it work?" is something Cody has extensive experience handling, and we can provide you with valuable guidance on how to reduce it early in the project to minimize financial cost and risk. Financial instruments, such as those from Innovation Norway and the Research Council of Norway, can mitigate risk by offering loans or grants. These grant schemes are incentives to carry out innovation projects that can create jobs and profitable industries in Norway. Most schemes are application-based and require that the support is catalytic, meaning that the project would not proceed without the support. The exception is the SkatteFUNN scheme, which does not need to be catalytic.

What is the difference between a prototype and a production-ready system?

A prototype is built to test and validate a concept. A production-ready system is designed for consistent, repeatable output at scale. The key difference is that production systems account for reliability, efficiency, safety, and long-term operation, not just functionality. Cody can do both. 

What are the biggest challenges when developing a hardware startup?

Hardware startups often struggle with translating an idea into something that can actually be built, tested, and scaled. Common challenges include technical feasibility, iteration time, cost control, and designing-for manufacturability early enough to avoid costly redesigns later. 

How do you design a product for manufacturability

You have identified a problem and have an idea for a product that solves it. Now, you need to design a product that can be produced and ready for market. Designing for manufacturability means developing a product that can be produced reliably, efficiently, and at scale. For Cody, all of this is considered from the start: selecting the right materials, simplifying assembly, and ensuring the design supports repeatable production without unnecessary complexity. How can startups reduce technical risk before scaling?

Technical risk is reduced through early validation. This includes feasibility studies, iterative prototyping, and testing under real conditions. By identifying limitations and refining the solution early, startups avoid major issues when moving into production.  

What should be validated before going into production?

Before production, startups should validate that the solution works as intended, can be produced consistently, meets safety and regulatory requirements, and is viable from a cost and operational perspective.
