ABB is a global technology leader in electrification and automation, enabling a more sustainable and resource-efficient future. With over 50,000 employees in over 100 countries, they collaborate with customers and partners to address the world's biggest challenges in electrical distribution and energy management - from energy source to outlet. ABB in Skien is the municipality's largest private employer with around 700 employees. The company develops, manufactures, delivers, and exports electrical equipment to over 80 countries.

For over 20 years, we have collaborated with ABB, providing solutions for their production and development. One of these projects is a service tool used for testing and verification of switchgear, including wind turbines. This ensures that all functions are tested in a significantly safer and more efficient manner.

The test case was created for ABB's service department - for use on the facilities of one of their largest customers in the portfolio. ABB needed a service tool specifically developed to connect and disconnect switches. The facilities are standardized, allowing for the creation of a test case to test all functions and provide necessary feedback. The case consists of a large control panel with switches and indicator lights, and beneath the panel is a compartment with cables and connectors.

"ABB approached us with a clearly defined wiring diagram for conducting the tests they desired. Based on the wiring diagram, Cody designed the layout where all lamps and switches would be, along with other solutions. Environmental focus and the circumstances the test case must endure were important considerations in the design," says Jared Hansen, project manager at Cody.

A mobile tool

One of the criteria for the test case was robustness. We have delivered a total of two such cases. ABB's service department often travels on assignments across borders. Therefore, it was important that the test case had to be transport-safe and withstand rough handling during loading and unloading at terminals and flights.

The test case has made service work more efficient because everything is in one place, and it is easy to transport. It functions as a miniature mobile control system.

“Our collaboration with Cody has contributed to increased efficiency and execution of our service assignments. Over the years, Cody has proven to be fast, flexible, and solution-oriented partners. With the case, we save valuable time and simplify the process, as we now avoid complex manual connections.” – Magne Reinholt, Service Manager i ABB.
